Ms. J. Jayalalitha
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
URGENT APPEAL TO STOP POLICE VIOLENCE IN KOODANKULAM, PLEASE STOP HASTY FUELLING OF THE PLANT AND START DIALOGUE WITH THE PEOPLE.
People have resorted to protests the world over, questioning the credibility and safety of the civilian use of nuclear power, following the Fukushima disaster in March 2011. The people of Idinthikkarai, Koodankulam and surrounding villages in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, are extremely worried and concerned about the hasty commissioning of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant, without abiding by essential safety measures.
On 9th March 2012, the non-violent satyagrahis, marched in thousands towards the Nuclear Power plant, as all their attempts to engage in a dialogue with the government failed. The government responded with the use of police force on peaceful protestors, using tear gas and lathi charge on large numbers of women and children. One fisherman has been killed in the police firing, and several injured. A high school student is seriously injured and traumatised by yesterday’s events. Police are continuing to harass people in their homes and villages.

The hasty move to load the fuel is absolutely undemocratic and has to be stopped.
For the sake of democracy, stop police violence on people, and start dialoguing with the people. In a democratic society, police and bullets cannot be the answer to voices of dissent.
Stop hasty fuelling of the plant until people’s grievances are addressed.
We urge you to stop police atrocities and come forward for an open dialogue with the people.
