INDIA CRYING FOR SOME HONESTY AND EFFICIENCY IN GOVERNANCE
Governments in India whether at centre or states have set priority of giving doles, freebies and subsidies to the poor. This includes fuel subsidy in kerosene, cooking gas and diesel, food subsidy and payments to pensioners, workers under NREGA. Also a large chunk of money is spent on socio-economic measures like midday meals. All such programmes and measures smack of management inefficiency, pilferages and corrupt practices.
A recent piece of news regarding money paid to 50000 bogus pensioners in 19 districts of Punjab including those who are dead and the reports on frauds being committed in NREGA payments are glaring examples of lack of efficiency and honesty in the governance. Firstly there is something basically wrong with the process of deciding the eligibility of an individual for a particular benefit, and thereafter no subsequent reviews are done to find out whether the eligibility is still valid or not. There is neither an accountability audit nor a financial audit in any of the schemes and whenever one is carried out big discrepancies emerge and make headlines for a few days. Sadly no corrective measures done or punishments meted out to wrong doers. Long live India and keep on crying for some honesty and efficiency in governance.
